Employee Training

Ensuring employees understand discrimination policies may help prevent problems from arising.

Employee Training

It is important for an employer to educate employees regarding its discrimination policies. Periodic training to refresh employees' understandings of the policies is beneficial in stopping and preventing discriminatory behavior in the workplace.

Providing discrimination and harassment training to employees is imperative for prevention. Employees should be aware of what makes an action or behavior harassing and/or discriminatory in nature and the expectations of the employee when subjected to, or witness of, harassing and/or discriminatory behavior.

Managerial Training

An employer can be held liable for a managerial employee’s actions or inactions. It is imperative newly hired or recently promoted managers are trained to understand and consistently enforce the employer’s discrimination policies.

Managers should:

  • Ensure applicants and employees are neither discriminated against nor harassed;
  • Know how to recognize and respond to requests for reasonable accommodations (disability and religious);
  • Be able to recognize and promptly and effectively respond to discrimination and harassment complaints;  and
  • Ensure applicants, employees or former employees are not retaliated against.
