Retaliation
Information and resources on retaliation in employment.
It is unlawful to discharge, expel, or otherwise retaliate or discriminate against any person for opposing practices forbidden by NH RSA 354-A.
What is Retaliation?
Retaliation is an adverse action taken against a person because they:
- Asserted their rights
- Opposed a discriminatory practice
- Filed a discrimination complaint
- Participated in an investigation
- Requested an accommodation
Examples of Retaliation
- Unwarranted disciplinary action
- Termination, suspension or layoff
- Reduction in hours
- Harassment
- Demotion
- Unwarranted changes in job duties/responsibilities
What to do if Subjected to Retaliation
- Submit a complaint with your employer; and/or
- Contact the Commission; and/or
- Submit a complaint with the Commission

Retaliation can occur outside of an employment setting. Examples of retaliatory adverse actions that are non-work related include:
- Disparaging the person to others or in the media;
- Making false reports to government authorities;
- Filing a civil action; and
- Making threats of deportation, or initiating other action with immigration authorities.
